ANT372H5 • Anthropology of Animals

The relationship between humans and other animals is one of the most hotly debated topics of our times. Through key classic and contemporary readings, this course introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of Animal Studies and explores how a variety of scholars and scholar-artists (including anthropologists) have critically engaged in these debates. Topics include: “animal” and “human” distinctions; animals as historical subjects; animal ethics; sensory ecology; animality; as well as ethnographic methods conducive to multispecies research.
