SOC370H5 • The Politics of Looking: A Sociological Approach to Art

This course is an introduction to the sociology of art. We will explore art and architecture from around the world paying equal attention to the aesthetic qualities of the object and its content, interrogating how art objects both reflect and help shape the societies that produced the object. Through a dialogic approach to learning through close looking and discussion, we will explore both the works of art and contemporary issues facing society. Students will be required to participate in field trips to museums as part of this course.
